MAGNETIC HEADS ARE BRIGHT,
like the radiant, bleached and blinding sunlight of an endless Australian sky.
The debut video for lead single, BLIND, is directed by Michaela Sanders (whose work includes ‘Keeping It Clean’ for NZ band Songs), and captures this spirit spectacularly.
Shot in several locations across MAGNETIC HEADS’ hometown (Sydney, Australia), the video is a celebration of exposure, the sun-drenched openness of the southern hemisphere, and the dreamlike state of existence evoked by the driving drumbeats, introspective lyrics and chiming guitars.
Formed by Jonathon Desmond Miller (a.k.a Des Miller), drummer Christopher Rudge (Dolly Rocker Movement, Flying Foxes) and guitarist Evan Lock, the sound is something distinctly from ‘here’. MAGNETIC HEADS also features brother, William Miller, on bass guitar, and Lucy Kaldor on keys/synths and backing vocals.
In BLIND, a heavy focus on jangling 12-string guitars, tambourines and twisted synth hooks is presided over by Miller’s penetrating and transfixing vocal delivery – very much reminiscent of the English new-wavers (Curtis, McCulloch and Morrissey spring immediately to mind). The overall sound, however, strikes chords in a much lighter vein, with echoes of early Go Betweens, Bryan Ferry and Talking Heads, not to mention contemporaries Deerhunter, Stephin Merritt (Magnetic Fields), Spoon and Grizzly Bear.
Magnetic Heads are on the verge of releasing their debut EP, recorded and produced by Simon Berkfinger (Philadelphia Grand Jury) and featuring BLIND. Stay tuned!
